A couple of years after the release of Queen’s mammoththree-video bio The Magic Years, a compilation of live material wasissued titled Rare Live: A Concert Through Time and Space. Releasedin most countries (except the U.S.), the video was directed by thesame duo responsible for The Magic Years — Rudi Dolezal and HannesRossacher. While a wide variety of material is covered from alleras of the band (from their hits to obscurities), the maincriticism is that few of the songs are shown in their entirety, andthat different performances (of the same song) are edited together.Still, Queen fanatics will enjoy viewing the clips of such uncommonsongs as My Melancholy Blues, Liar, You Take My Breath Away, amedley of Big Spender/Jailhouse Rock/Stupid Cupid, and Stone ColdCrazy. More renowned compositions, such as Crazy Little ThingCalled Love, Killer Queen, Radio Ga Ga, Love of My Life and We Arethe Champions help balance things out. Also included with each clipis the date and location of the performance (as well as attendancestatistics). The video also kickstarts with the first Queenperformance ever caught on video (1973 in a London rehearsalstudio). Rare Live is both a refreshing eye-opener for Queenconnoisseurs and a thrilling introduction for the uninitiated,collecting some of the most precious, outrageous and humoroushighlights of their live history into one video concert.
