WOW! Where the hell did this band all of a sudden come from? This is the best of the seventies, but it's 2003! So it's not just fashion that's reviving the seventies, huh?
Without kidding, this band has every right to play their seventies-influenced stuff in this day and age. The music is riff-laden, and the vocals (Pär Wennerström) are exactly as soulful as they should be to lift this music up to an even higher level.
I've written it in reviews here before: I'm an eighties kid (Musically that is; I was born in '72) and most of the seventies stuff blew by me, 'cause I found the eighties an excellent musical era. The only bands I really dug into were The Who and Kansas.
But hearing Turning Leaf makes me wonder just what it exactly is that I've been neglecting for all these years. My gut feeling (call it a hunch) would tell me that fans of early Led Zeppelin / Deep Purple or Ten Years After would love this stuff. But I lack the musical foundation to motivate that hunch.
So I'll leave that to you. Me? I'm a newby to this stuff. I loved the first "Black Crowes" album but that southern rock superalbum has a whole different vibe as "Finally".
But what difference does it make. This Malmö, Sweden outfit consisting of Pär Wennerström (vocals) Mats Olsson (bass), guitarist Patrik Lindberg, Ola Jönnberg (drums, percussion) and Magnus Holmberg (hammond / keyboards) did an awesome job. And without wanting to single out anyone it's especially Pär Wennerström and Magnus Holmberg that blow me away.
Great album, great vibe, great songs. If you are, or ever have been into soulful rock music this might well be the surprise of the year for you!
