Herbert J. Kane föddes i Montreal, Quebec, tog examen från Moody Bible Institute i Chicago 1935. Via China Inland Mission åkte han till Kina Anhwei-provinsen tillsammans med sin fru, Winnifried Mary. Herbert J. Kane har sin religiösa bakgrund från den konservativa rörelsen Plymouth-bröderna, men i mötet med Kina och Stanley Jonas skrifter från Indien blev han öppen för ”evangeliets sociala och politiska implikationer". Herbert J. Kane har undervisat på kända utbildningar i USA och Kanada. Han blev den första evangelikalen som valdes till ordförande för American Society of Missiology (1976-1977). Herbert J. Kane var en av de mest produktiva och inflytelserika evangelikala missiologerna under sin tid.
