”This is a ”cel” - a handpainted drawing on transparent celluloid - actually used in the animated film production of ”Gnomes” a 1980 CBS TV Special from the best-selling book by Rien Portvliet and Wil Huygen.

The artist or animator first makes an outline drawing of the character on paper. This pencil outline is then transferred to the front of a sheet acetate - the cel. After the transfer highly skilled cel painters known as opaquers paint the outlined characters on the back of the cel so the colors appear brilliant, uniform and free of texture. Colors are applied in layers. Each layer must dry before the next color can be applied. All paints are precisely formulated in order to maintain color consistency from sequence to sequence.

Each cel differs in slightly degree from another, and is therefore UNIQUE!

A limited number of these ”Gnomes” cels, featuring various characters from the film, have been authorized from distribution.
