• Metal: Copper
• Mint: Barcelona Mint / La Seca (Casa de la Moneda de Barcelona)
• Diameter: 21.8 mm
• Weight: 4 g
Original copper seiseno issued in 1643 for the Province of Barcelona, Principality of Catalonia, under the authority of Louis XIV, King of France and Count of Barcelona. Following the death of Louis XIII in May 1643, the young Louis XIV succeeded to the French throne and inherited the title of Count of Barcelona through the French Crown’s protectorate arrangement established in 1641, during the Reapers’ War (Guerra dels Segadors). This conflict formed part of the broader Franco-Spanish War (1635–1659), within which Catalonia had revolted against the Spanish Crown and placed itself under French protection. In 1643, Barcelona remained under effective French-aligned control, with governance exercised locally through the Generalitat and the Consell de Cent of Barcelona under the regency of Anne of Austria and the administration of Cardinal Mazarin. This issue belongs to the official necessity coinage authorized to alleviate the acute shortage of small change caused by prolonged warfare, military occupation, and the disruption of regular monetary circulation. The seiseno formed part of the traditional Catalan monetary system as a fractional denomination of the sou and the lliura. Struck at the Barcelona Mint (La Seca) under emergency conditions, these coins reflect the continuation of French-aligned Catalan authority during the transitional year of 1643 and represent an important phase of mid-17th-century Catalan wartime coinage.
