A rare vintage Japanese straw horse known as a Shinobi Koma, a traditional folk craft from the Hanamaki region of Iwate, Japan. These symbolic horse figures were historically offered at Enmanji Kannon temple as quiet prayers for love, matchmaking, fertility, family prosperity, and good harvest.
The name Shinobi refers to the custom of secretly offering the horse without being seen. After a wish was fulfilled, it was customary to decorate the horse with colorful cloth and bells as a gesture of gratitude. This example features red, black and beige cotton fabric accents, a small metal bell, and hand-formed rice straw construction. The beige cloth carries kanji writing.
A meaningful example of Japanese mingei folk art, blending spiritual symbolism with rustic craftsmanship. A rare collector’s item and a striking natural decor piece.
Condition: Good vintage condition. The back legs are slightly less compact than the front due to the nature of the straw binding. The tying straw is loose but stable. The tail shows some wear from age. Structurally stable and displays beautifully.
