PENGUIN CRITICAL STUDIES
As enigmatic as Emily Brontë herself, Wuthering Heights stands out as one of the most strikingly beautiful and haunting novels in English literature.
In his intriguing study Rod Mengham probes into the forces at work in the book: the violence of the passion between Cathy and Heathcliff, at constant odds with social, moral and religious norms, and the fierce struggle between nature and civilization that takes place within many of the characters. He also questions the reliability of the main narrators: that of Nelly Dean, the 'hidden enemy', and the civilized' Lockwood, whose viciousness, when faced with the irruption of lawless forces, is equal to any that he encounters at Wuthering Heights. The role of the subconscious, as well as the imagery and symbolism of Wuthering Heights that stem so powerfully from the themes, are also discussed.
The cover shows Nechirn by Nesta Jennings Campbell in the Cheltenham Art Gallery. (Photo: Bridgeman Art Library)
