In his mid-30s, Abe clings to the trappings of his adolescence, including the extensive collection of toys and action figures adorning his boyhood bedroom. Still living with his parents Jackie and Phyllis, Abe works for his increasingly disappointed father and spends evenings ruthlessly trouncing his mother at backgammon. His older brother’s success as a California doctor only intensifies his resentment and sense of failure.

When Abe meets Miranda, whose personal and professional disasters have sent her back to her parents’ suburban home, he sees a chance at stability and attachment. He proposes after a brief courtship, but the relationship fractures as Abe’s internal anxieties and self-destructive fantasies begin to dominate his perception of reality.
