Why do we have rules for animals and animal products?
The sale of animals and animal products is regulated by Swedish law and EU legislation. Some species are protected and may therefore not be sold or traded freely. To protect animals and endangered species, we have rules for what may be sold on Tradera.
Prohibited to sell
Live animals
Animal traps, for example fox traps and pike traps
Fur where it is not stated which animal it comes from
Medicines intended for animals
Electric collars and tick collars intended for animals
Parts or products from dogs and cats
Protected species
Parts or products from protected species may only be sold if you can show that you have the right to sell them. This applies, for example, to ivory, tortoiseshell and parts of birds of prey.
Parts or products from protected mammals:
Primates (all types of monkeys and apes)
Cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises)
Most wild cats (for example ocelots, leopards, lions, cheetahs, tigers, lynxes and Bengal cats)
Elephants
Wolves
Brown bears
Rhinoceroses
Birds that live in the wild in the EU are protected. It is therefore not permitted to sell them, whether alive, stuffed or as parts such as feathers and eggs. This also applies to birds born and raised in captivity.
Parts or products from protected birds:
All birds of prey, for example peregrine falcons, white-tailed eagles, kites, hawks and all types of owls
Parts or products from protected fish and other aquatic animals:
All types of sturgeon of the order Acipenseriformes, basking sharks and great white sharks
Certain species of coral, seahorses, crayfish and other crustaceans
Permitted to sell, with restrictions
If the species is listed in Annex A of the CITES list, or is protected under the EU regulation on trade in wild fauna and flora, the item may be sold if it has a CITES certificate from the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
If the species is listed in Annex B or C of the CITES list, you need to be able to show that the item was acquired legally. Details of certificates or other documents must be included in the listing.
If you sell a stuffed animal, the listing must always state which species it is and where it comes from.
Permitted to sell
Furs, stuffed animals and other products made from animal parts from species that are not protected, for example:
Muskrat
Arctic fox, blue or white
Eurasian beaver
Red fox/silver fox
Persian/karakul sheep
Coyote
Nutria/coypu
Mink
