This study explores the development of a national literature in English Canada in the post-WWII period by means of examining the cultural infra-structure that developed in those years in the form of governmental and non-governmental organizations. It also examines the attempts by the Canadian government to export English-Canadian literature to other coun tries. Focusing on Sweden as target nation, the dissertation follows the growing recognition of English-Canadian literature among Swedish critics. The thesis establishes that the presence of English-Canadian literature in the form of translations increased dramatically towards the end of the twentieth century. The 1980s and 1990s witnessed the emergence of a Swedish canon of English-Canadian literature, and this study examines the content of this canon and argues that it differs in interesting ways from the corresponding canon in English Canada.
