Formed in 1996 by Alexander Kaschte,Samsas Traum was a German (eventually calling Austria home)experimental metal act, encompassing elements of dark wave, gothic,black metal, and symphonic metal. The name is derived from theprotagonist Gregor Samsa in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis (1915). Theirthird album Utopia shows that this band just becomes more and moredifficult to classify the band’s style. Kaschte has parted wayswith his vocalist Johannes Welsch, and with that he seems to haveparted with his black metal parts. What’s on offer on Utopia canroughly be classified under gothic, even if this description israther inadequate. The band still mixes classic elements withgothic and heavy parts, which isn’t new, but in this case it’sextremely successful. Utopia is a mix of the classic and gothicparts of Lacrimosa, the heaviness of Eisregen and Atrocity and thenyou can ad some folk and piano. Even if this sounds like its madeup of chaos and confusion it isnt. You never get the feeling thatyoure listening to an experimental album. The album is actuallymore catchy than one might expect from this description and itinvites you to sing along.
