In thetwo-and-half years since Volbeat’s wildly successful BeyondHell/Above Heaven, they’ve traveled some miles, both literally andfiguratively. They toured not only Europe but the U.S. and Canadain support for nearly a year, and parted ways with lead guitaristThomas Bredahl. A permanent replacement was found in RobertCaggiano, formerly of Anthrax, who was enlisted to produce OutlawGentlemen And Shady Ladies and play on select tracks. His additionhas proved integral to the band’s ever evolving sound. While themeld of various kinds of heavy metal, country, and rockabilly isstill present here — it is now undoubtedly the sound of Volbeatitself — the lines between those styles are less pronounced. Thesometimes jarring shift from rockabilly to thrash, from death metalto the Johnny Cash-country on previous albums, still happens, buthere these sounds often coexist within the same song. While it isaccurate to say that this set is more accessible than anythingVolbeat has attempted previously, it is also the most ambitious setof tracks they’ve committed to tape. The songwriting is tight,focused; there are lots of hooks, most of them heavy — thanks, nodoubt, to Caggiano’s presence. His playing style is full ofinsanely catchy riffs, vamps, and intricate melodies. Michael TomasPoulsen’s vocals still blend Elvis, James Hetfield, and KeithCaputo, but they growl less; they’re expressive and naturalsounding. Hard rock and vintage heavy metal are the prevalentsounds here. Room 24 has King Diamond guesting on vocals. While itis accurate to say that Outlaw Gentlemen And Shady Ladies is moreaccessible than anything Volbeat has attempted previously, it isalso the most ambitious — and arguably enjoyable — set they’vecommitted to tape.
