With both oftheir previous releases, Death Awakens and Chalice of Thagirion,the band was indubitably searching for the most suitable blackmetal direction. Having their musical desideratum redefined,Mephorash strikes again with their third opus – 1557 – Rites ofNullification. Very often, with this type of black metal, theband’s problem is that they try to put too much emphasis on theatmosphere, taking the actual music for granted. Mephorash provedotherwise. They raised the sizeable monument – the obelisk of pureart, exquisitely constructed of both aspects of black metal. 1557rivets your attention from the very start with a powerful andsublime intro that takes you for a spiritual journey through themurky galaxy. The album features a number of vocalists involvedinto such outfits as Acherontas, Malign or Hetroertzen, to name afew. Four extended compositions clearly indicate the band’sdifferent approach to music. It creates a form of concept albumwith an enigmatic story to tell. Looking for their most comfortablesound, the band expresses themselves with some doom aestheticswhich give the entire album even more mystifying feel. The ritualaura comes to the foreground and it doesn’t allow you to beimpervious at any point of listening to 1557. The great sound ofdrums makes it a fantastic addition to the album’s character. Also,the aforementioned vocalists contribute to a strikingly uniformstyle delivering an extra impression of symmetry. Everythingreflects everything, however it is far from making you confusedwith Mephorash’s music. It rather overwhelms you with itsmagnificence and purity. Mephorash perfectly places itself on atriumphant pedestal wielding an outstanding and provocative album.The maturity they have developed over the past few years reachesthe peak on song Cheidolun – Breaking the Blade of Beriah. Thissong alone exemplifies the band’s songwriting skill and quality. Ina single phrase, a very well done album. Do not hesitate to checkthis piece of black art out.
