A group of street performers, acrobats and dancers converged in San Diego in the mid-Nineties, integrating their exceptional talents in a performance concept that blurs boundaries between theatre and circus. The prevailing 'try anything' spirit amongst the international troupe allowed an innovative art form to emerge, with a genuinely fresh script and stunning theatrical style. Originally performed in San Diego for an audience of 400 in March of 1996 - with a firm commitment to it's improvisational roots - Il Circo has evolved to become an international sensation. Il Circo travels around the globe and has been showcased for nearly 5 million people since that day in 1996. This music is a tribute to the talent that continues to inspire audiences as they share the dream. 'Viaggio' is a story of an inspiring journey. It is a story of transformation that features the internationally acclaimed cirque troupe 'Il Circo'. The opening scene is a 1920's carnival where a young girl has wandered from her parents to see the puppet show. It is here that the character of 'Marionetta' beckons the audience as well as the young child to join a magical journey (or viaggio) to a mysteriously ethereal place. Marionetta stands 12 feet tall and contains a fully-functioning proscenium stage within the front of her beautiful dress. On this miniature stage, a troupe of marionettes (identical replicas of the actual characters from the show) entertains the young child. Suddenly the marionettes stop, and with a haunting musical drone, the entire carnival character become frozen in time. Human size characters from this puppet show are now revealed from within Marionette's stunning garment, as each of the carnival characters strip away their bland attire to reveal strikingly colorful and contemporary, whimsical costuming. The transformation has begun, and the young child is now caught up in this underworld, the world where dreams come true. Greeted by the enchantress, her 'guide' throughout this world (Columbina the 'clown'), our young star's journey has begun. The orchestral melody blossoms as the child and Columbina encounter the many characters entering from every corner of the stage. With a bolt of lightning, the music dramatically changes to an upbeat blend of exciting rhythm and melody. Through sophisticated choreography, our dancers and acrobats take the stage to present a ground and aerial based acrobatic dance. Performing on Chinese Poles, our artists display dazzling aerial feats of climbing, spinning, flipping, and daring falls throughout this exhilarating production. With enthusiastic ovation, the audience will cheer their own welcome to the world of imagination, and the listener has only begun on their own 'Viaggio' of 11 of the most musically hypnotic songs that make up this splendid score.
