While many modern metal bands are already withering away bytheir second album and have curled up and died by their third,DevilDriver have continued to mutate, growing stronger and deadlierwith each successive release. ‘Beast’, which follows 2009’scritically lauded ‘Pray For Villains’, finds the band refusing tocompromise in their mission to deliver the aural equivalent ofbeing slapped round the head with a baseball bat. ‘’Beast’ is anexorcism of animalistic primal hooks, death metal percussion andpropulsive thrashing. With Beast, DevilDriver ventured into newterritory: the grooves are catchier than ever, but there’s anintricacy and taut technicality to them, representative of anangrier musical monster. Beast, comes a mere two years after theband’s incredibly successful Pray for Villains, which debuted atnumber 35 on the Billboard Top 200. Villains even surpassedfirst-week sales of their critically acclaimed 2007 outing, TheLast Kind Words and 2005’s The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand. It’s beena constant uptick for the Southern California quintet since theyfirst blasted a hole through the zeitgeist in 2003 with theirpivotal self-titled debut. With Dez Fafara from Coal Chamber.
