Botanist are different. When composer, lyricist, vocalist, andmulti-instrumentalist Otrebor created the San Francisco based bandin 2009, he already had a specific lyrical concept in mind that haspersisted to permeate all releases until and including today. Thesongs of this project are told from the perspective of aprotagonist called The Botanist, who is characterised as a crazedman of science that lives in self-imposed exile, as far away fromHumanity and it’s crimes against Nature as possible. In hissanctuary of fantasy and wonder, which he calls The Verdant Realm,The Botanist surrounds himself with plants and flowers to findsolace in the company of the Natural world, while he envisions thedestruction of mankind. Botanists lyrics are equally informed byscientific nomenclature as they are inspired by Romantic-erapoetry, art, and philosophy. Botanist are different also in musicalterms. In a striking departure from traditional metalinstrumentation, Otrebor uses distorted hammered dulcimers insteadof guitars. This also makes Botanist the first band to adaptmagnetic pickups to hammered dulcimer, and perform on stage.Stylistically, the Americans pay tribute to the mentality of someof the pioneering Scandinavian black metal bands connection tonature, before spinning the dark yarn into new sonic and emotionalfabrics. To Botanist, the black metal trope about misanthropy andof being alone in the forest is in fact about the woods and it’sfloral inhabitants themselves. Each named plant becomes it’s owncharacter in the ever growing pantheon of the project’s green metaldiscography. Botanist sprouted from the seed of their debutdouble-album I: The Suicide Tree / II: A Rose From The Dead (2011)into a tripartite sapling with the addition of III: Doom in Bloom(2012). From this early growth, their sprawling discographydeveloped into several directions with two further solo-albumsforming the stems: IV: Mandragora (2013) and VI: Flora (2014). Inaddition to the albums, Otrebor also released several EPs. When themastermind started to work with a constantly mutating line-up instudio and on stage, he switched from Roman numbers to the markerCollective, which appears on the following albums, Collective: TheShape Of He To Come (2017) and Collective: Setlist 2017 (2017).Feeling that this system was too clunky the collective version ofBotanist released the next three full-length albums under thesimple titles Ecosystem (2019), Ecosystem Version B (2020), andPhotosynthesis (2020). With 9 albums in their discography they donthave a lot to prove anymore. They have done so much cohesive andwell produced music. Even if this band has grown with age itsalways a pleasure to go back to their debut. Its strange, odd andatmospheric, and unique as Botanist has always kept true to theiruniqueness. The zither is dark, eerie, cold; the agonised vocals, perfectly strained, and the drums tight and refreshingly triggerfree. Definitely a nod to the lo-fi black metal tradition, withsurprising melodies and fascinating lyrics about various flora.Definitely one of the more unique black metal bands you canfind
