As usual, a new Grave album means plenty of kick-ass old-schooldeath metal for your listening pleasure. They don’t break any newground or make any attempts to evolve or experiment, they just dowhat they do best, and continue to do it well. They establishedthemselves from their early days as a death metal band willing toslow things down and go for a moody, doom metal style. Then, onSoulless and Hating Life, they developed into a groove-orienteddeath ‘n’ roll band, but that was in the mid-’90’s when most metalmusic went out of favor and stopped selling. Grave went on a longhiatus, but returned for good in 2002, and ever since, they’vereleased one quality album after another, some faster, some slower,but all pummelling Swedish death metal at its finest. Out ofRespect for the Dead is an effective collection of tracks that doesa nice job of balancing their speed, doom, and groove so that youget variety within each song and the album as a whole. OlaLindgren’s familiar ultra-thick guitar tone establishes from thestart that Grave is back again in fine form. This a completelyenjoyable album for anyone who likes these guys. My favorite tracksare Mass Grave Mass, the title track, The Ominous They, Deified,and Grotesque Glory. Mass Graves Mass mixes breakneck speed andslow doom with an occasional raw, punk-like guitar sound. The titletrack has awesome old-school riffs between the verses and classicGrave groove. The Ominous “They” is full of sheer power and somekiller riffs. Deified also has crushing riffs amid several coolsections that fluidly shift tempos, not to mention a sweet basssolo. Grotesque Glory is a nearly ten minute journey through alittle of everything that makes Grave what they are. Once again,I’m highly satisfied with new Grave. Pure death metal brutalityfrom one of the originals.
