Runouts are etched except for the plate marks which are stamped:
A single capital letter is stamped at approximately 9:00 relative to the matrix number at 12:00 (Aston-Clinton's characteristic ”broken A” may appear as A, ?, or ?, showing only the serifs); plate numbers are stamped at 3:00. Some early variants may lack the ”A” stamp and have a scribed/etched ”<” across the locked groove instead (see Variant 14).
