Después de su gira mundial de apoyo a Brain Salad Surgery (1973), el grupo se tomó un descanso prolongado antes de volver a reunirse en 1976 para grabar un nuevo álbum

Works Volume 1 presenta un lado dedicado para que cada miembro escriba y arregle sus propias pistas, mientras que el cuarto lado presenta canciones interpretadas colectivamente. Keith Emerson grabó su Concierto para piano n.º 1, Greg Lake escribió varias canciones con el letrista Peter Sinfield y Carl Palmer grabó pistas de variados estilos musicales.

El álbum alcanzó el puesto número 9 en la lista de álbumes del Reino Unido y el número 12 en el Billboard 200 de EE. UU. y se convirtió en oro en ambos países, este último con 500.000 copias vendidas. La canción grupal "Fanfare for the Common Man", la adaptación de Emerson de la composición de 1942 de Aaron Copland, fue lanzada como sencillo en mayo de 1977. Llegó al número 2 en la lista de singles del Reino Unido para convertirse en el sencillo más alto de la banda en el Reino Unido
