Antique Swedish Copper Money

This is an antique Swedish copper money from 1832. The front features a crowned shield with the text ”FOLKETS KÄRLEK MIN BELÖNING” and the value ”1/6 R. G.”. The reverse side displays a profile portrait with the inscription ”CARL XIV SVERIGES NORR. G. O. V. KONUNG”.

Sweden 1/6 Riksdaler Specie – Carl XIV Johan – 19th Century Silver CoinOriginal Swedish 1/6 Riksdaler Specie from the reign of King Carl XIV Johan, one of the more distinctive denominations of Sweden’s pre-decimal monetary system.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Carl XIV Johan, surrounded by the royal legend identifying him as King of Sweden and Norway. The portrait is shown in the classical style typical of Swedish coinage of the period.
The reverse displays the crowned Swedish coat of arms, framed by an ornate wreath. Beneath the shield appears the denomination 1/6 R. Sp., standing for one sixth of a Riksdaler Specie.
The Riksdaler Specie was an important silver-based monetary unit in Sweden during the first half of the 19th century. Fractional denominations such as this 1/6 Riksdaler circulated as practical everyday silver currency before Sweden later transitioned to the krona system in the 1870s.
This example is in heavily circulated condition, with substantial wear to both the royal portrait and the reverse shield. The surfaces display dark grey toning, areas of greenish oxidation or deposits, and general age-related wear. Despite the condition, the main legends, portrait, crowned shield and denomination remain identifiable.
An interesting historic coin for collectors of Swedish silver coins, Carl XIV Johan coinage, Riksdaler Specie denominations, Scandinavian numismatics and 19th-century European currency.
