=====
French Vichy Francisque Gallique decoration award badge. A scarce original circa 1941 to 1945 period French Vichy badge; small gilt double headed axe inlaid with red, white and blue enamels, the shaft comprising a Marshal’s baton of blue enamel and bearing 10 gilt stars; the reverse impressed with maker's details. Created on 26th May 1941 by the Vichy authorities to rank as the highest national award on a par with the Legion of Honour. It could be worn on both military uniform or civilian dress and was awarded for having performed brilliant deeds of military or civic service, or have shown active attachment to the person and work of the Marshal etc.

Being a WW2 official badge of the Order of the Gallic Francisque. The Francisque (actually a labrys)- initially the personal symbol of Petain - was gradually used on official documents as the coat of arms of the Vichy regime. At least, 2626 individuals received the order of the Francisque. The total number of recipients remains however unknown as the archives listing all the holders burnt at the end of WW2. Just like all the Vichy decorations, the Order and its respective badges were banned following the end of WW2.
