Albert Einstein and his wife, Elsa, arriving in San Diego, USA, on New Year's Eve 1930. Einstein was one of the greatest theoretical physicists in history. In 1905, whilst a patent clerk, he published 3 papers that would lead to his 1921 Nobel Prize: calculations on Brownian motion, the photoelectric effect and special relativity. In 1915 he published his General Theory of Relativity, explaining gravity as a distortion of space-time by a mass. In 1933 he moved to America, working on the Manhattan Project in WW2. Thereafter he was a campaigner for nuclear disarmament. In 1952 he declined an invitation to become President of Israel.

Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who is best known for developing the theory of relativity. Einstein also made important contributions to quantum mechanics. His mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2, which arises from special relativity, has been called "the world's most famous equation". He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.
