A magnificent and large Art Nouveau “Sgraffito” ytterfoder by Josef Ekberg for Gustavsberg, made and signed in 1917.

The pot features beautiful vivid blue colors with a lovely floral motif in relief, combined with Ekberg’s characteristic bumpy sgraffito texture that gives the surface a stunning depth on his handmade design.
The rim is decorated with an elegant architectural border that completes the design beautifully.

The underside is hand-signed Gustavsberg 1917 and J.E. (Josef Ekberg 1877–1945), who was a Swedish ceramic designer at Gustavsberg Porslinsfabrik from 1889, later becoming the artistic director.
He developed the famous sgraffito technique, where patterns are carefully carved through layers of glaze to reveal the color beneath.

The condition is very good. There are a couple of small hairline cracks on the rim that still hold strong, and some crackling, but nothing serious. Overall, the piece looks absolutely fantastic.

A really unique and impressive work of Swedish Art Nouveau that you don’t see every day.
