POP ART Inspired in the September 1919 Bauhaus collective movement of Walter Gropius from Weimar that functioned from 1919 to 1933 when the extreme right arrived in Germany and banned Bauhaus.
The Bauhaus was founded by architect Walter Gropius in Weimar.
It was grounded in the idea of creating
a Gesamtkunstwerk ("comprehensive artwork") in which all the
arts would eventually be brought together.
The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents
in modern design, modernist architecture,
and architectural education. The Bauhaus movement had a profound
influence on subsequent developments in art,
architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design,
and typography.
Staff at the Bauhaus included prominently
artists such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, etc
László Moholy-Nagy at various points.
The Bauhaus was born in 1919. Founded by a colective of men & women artists and designers from Germany, Netherlands, Rusia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, etc...That year Germany had just lost a bloody world war. A fragile new republic had been stablished with its constituent assembly in Weimar. Walter Gropius founded the Statliches Bauhaus (State-funded school of Arts and Crafts) He began his revolutionary school with the awowed purpose of "Not to propagate any style, system, dogma, formula or vogue, but simply to excert a revitalizing influence on design". But despite the hopes of the Weimar Republic, the nation was in economic turmoil. The Bauhaus would draw its strenght from the social ferment, but ultimately suffer from the relentlessly belligerent political environment. For the Bauhaus to have been closed only months after the nazies came to power in 1933. It suggests it was a radical political institution at odds not only with german tradition, but with the "Madmans" nationalistic ideology. In fact through the Bauhaus was build as a "Cathedral of Socialism" on a foundation that included marxist theories about Art and industry, politics per se were not the primary impetus. The Bauhaus was established to help save the german economy by preparing a new generation of artists and artisans to deal with the demands of industrialization on society and culture. Bauhaus sought to end the "alienation" of the designer / craftperson from his or hers labour, and was dedicated to the concept of "Unified work of Art". It would democratize art by removing the distintion between "Fine and Applied Art", and by making art responsive to the needs of the people. Gropius proclaimed: There is no essential difference between the artist and the craftsman.

"You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the world's power always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a globe , And that's the stars too. The wind whirls in its greatest power. The birds build their nests in circles, because their religion is the same as ours... Till and with the seasons they form a big circle in their changes, and they always return to where they were. . A person's life is a circle from childhood to childhood, and that's where power moves." -- Black moose, Oglala Nation
