The sophomorestudio effort from the ultra-prolific extreme metal veteran andmastermind behind Pantera and Down, among other projects, ChoosingMental Illness as a Virtue delivers caustic tsunamis of atonalriffing, fractured blastbeats, and freakish instrumentation, all ofwhich serve as a vehicle for Anselmo's unsettling lyrics andlarynx-shredding howl. As was the case with 2013's Walk ThroughExits Only, Anselmo is joined by frequent collaborators José Manuel"Blue" Gonzalez (drums), Stephen "Schteve" Taylor (guitar), andWalter Howard (bass), with newcomer Mike DeLeon taking over fordeparting guitarist Marzi Montazeri, all of whom contribute to thesonic beatdown with extreme prejudice. In flinging bits ofgrindcore, death metal, punk, thrash, and avant-garde against theproverbial extreme metal wall, the Illegals have crafted anotherdivisive collection of aural hate mail that will please longtimeAnselmo enthusiasts, and induce apoplexy in his detractors.
