Mid-Century Abstract Figurative Oil Painting – Harlequin Style – PAYS 51

Original mid-century oil painting from the 1950s/60s, featuring a stylized Harlequin-inspired couple in rich colours and bold lines. The front is marked “PAYS 51”, which is not a signature but a period-typical studio or catalogue mark often used by European workshops and decorative art studios during the 1950s–60s. Such markings were frequently applied to identify series, motifs or internal production numbers, especially for continental studio art intended for Scandinavian and Central European export markets.

The painting retains its original mid-century wooden frame and has been in the same family since 1972 (photo from May 1972 available as provenance).
On the reverse is an old handwritten ink note reading “Jean Louis Faye’s Harlekin”. This is not an artist’s signature, but a later identification note – likely written by a previous owner, dealer, importer or art association, as was common practice at the time.

Condition:
Good vintage condition with expected age-related patina to the frame.
There is a very small puncture in the canvas (approx. 2 × 1 mm), only visible on close inspection and in angled light. The canvas is stable with no spreading, no tears and no structural damage. The paint layer is secure.
