Beskrivning
A curated Swiss Confederation minor coinage collection consisting primarily of 1 Rappen and 2 Rappen issues spanning the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. The group reflects the continuity of Swiss federal small-denomination currency, with visible dates including 1900, 1929 (B mint), 1933, 1943 (zinc wartime issue), 1946, 1948 (B), 1949 (B), 1952, 1953 (B), 1954, and 1955.
The 1 Rappen pieces display the standard Swiss reverse design featuring the numeral “1” within a wreath of oak leaves tied at the base, accompanied by the legend “HELVETIA.” The obverse carries the Swiss cross within a shield or wreath depending on the period, with the federal inscription. Several examples show the “B” mintmark for Bern, Switzerland’s federal mint. The 1943 issue is composed of zinc, reflecting wartime metal substitutions during World War II when bronze was reserved for strategic use. Post-war bronze compositions resume in later issues such as 1946 and 1948.
The 2 Rappen coins dated 1952, 1954, and 1955 feature the large numeral “2” with wheat ear motif, a clean and functional design consistent with Swiss minimalist coinage aesthetics. These bronze issues were widely used in everyday commerce and represent Switzerland’s stable mid-20th century monetary system prior to the withdrawal of low denominations from circulation in later decades.
Also included is a 1 Rappen 1900, representing an earlier federal issue from the turn of the century, showing the enduring design language that remained largely unchanged for decades. The long production span of these types illustrates Switzerland’s monetary continuity, conservative design policy, and high minting standards at the Bern Mint.
All coins are individually housed in protective holders and arranged within album pages, forming a structured and curated Swiss small-denomination study group. The range of dates and inclusion of mintmarks and wartime metal variations provide added numismatic interest for collectors of Swiss Confederation coinage, European 20th-century minor currency, and transitional metal issues.
