Vintage Scandinavian Puukko Utility Knife with Leather Sheath – G.K. Inscribed Blade – Approx. 19.5 cm

—————

Era and identification:

Vintage Scandinavian-style puukko utility knife, likely dating from the mid to late 20th century.

The knife features the classic Nordic puukko profile with a narrow single-edged carbon steel blade, a polished wooden handle, a light-coloured ferrule (possibly antler, bone, or another natural material), and its original brown leather sheath with decorative tooling and belt hanger.

The blade is inscribed “G.K.” near the ricasso. This most likely represents the initials of a previous owner rather than the manufacturer, as no maker’s mark is visible.

Design:

This knife follows the traditional Scandinavian puukko design, a tool developed over centuries throughout Finland, Sweden, and Norway for everyday outdoor life.

Puukko knives have historically been indispensable for woodworking, carving, preparing food, fishing, hunting, and countless camp tasks. Their simple, highly practical construction and comfortable wooden handles have made them one of Northern Europe’s most enduring knife designs.

The accompanying leather sheath is decorated with traditional geometric tooling and remains a desirable feature for collectors of Scandinavian outdoor equipment.

History:

The Scandinavian puukko is one of the most influential utility knife designs ever created. Unlike decorative hunting knives, the puukko evolved as an everyday working tool carried by farmers, woodsmen, fishermen, craftsmen, and reindeer herders across Northern Europe.

Its straightforward construction, comfortable grip, and controllable blade made it ideal for precision carving and daily outdoor work. The design became so successful that it influenced military survival knives and bushcraft knives around the world.

Many vintage puukkos were personalised by their owners with initials or simple engravings. The “G.K.” inscription on this example may therefore represent its former owner, adding an element of personal history accumulated through decades of use.

Today, authentic vintage Scandinavian utility knives remain popular among collectors of Nordic tools, bushcraft enthusiasts, and those who appreciate traditional handcrafted outdoor equipment.
