Beskrivning
A striking piece of South African Raku art pottery by The Fenix, handmade and individually decorated within the distinctive tradition of African-inspired studio ceramics.
The sculptural form depicts a standing meerkat, Suricata suricatta, rendered in bold geometric fields of deep turquoise blue, emerald green, burnt orange and warm ivory. Dark hand-drawn contours and the characteristic smoky Raku crackle give the surface an extraordinary depth and graphic quality.
Playful in subject, yet unmistakably sculptural in presence.
THE FENIX · SOUTH AFRICA
The Fenix is a South African pottery studio established in the Western Cape, known for African-inspired Raku ceramics created through skilled, hands-on production.
This example retains both its original The Fenix hang tag and its original “Handmade in South Africa” export label, providing unusually complete maker and country-of-origin provenance.
A hand-incised maker’s mark, “Muma”, is present beneath the base.
FIRE · SMOKE · RAKU
The original The Fenix tag describes the dramatic process behind the piece.
After glazing, the ceramic is fired to approximately 950°C and removed from the kiln while still intensely hot. It is then placed into sawdust, creating the reduction process responsible for Raku’s distinctive finish.
The sudden change in temperature causes the glaze to develop its fine network of cracks. Smoke from the smouldering sawdust penetrates these fissures, permanently darkening the crackle pattern and exposed areas of clay.
The process is inherently unpredictable.
Differences in heat, smoke, glaze and reduction mean that every finished piece develops its own individual colour variations, crackle pattern and surface character.
No two examples emerge precisely alike.
SOUTH AFRICAN ARTISAN CRAFT
The Fenix belongs to South Africa’s internationally recognised tradition of artisan and Fair Trade-associated craft production, where handmade ceramics became both an artistic language and a means of connecting skilled local makers with an international design market.
Rather than industrial manufacture, each stage relies on human skill: forming, finishing, decorating, glazing and firing.
The result retains the traces of both the maker and the fire.
AFRICAN WILDLIFE
African wildlife forms an important part of the visual vocabulary of South African decorative ceramics.
Elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos and other iconic animals are frequently encountered, while strongly colour-blocked meerkat sculptures are considerably less common on the international secondary market.
Comparable South African colour-blocked Raku wildlife sculptures have appeared through international auction houses and specialist studio-pottery dealers, placing the form naturally between African folk art, studio pottery, collectible design and ceramic sculpture.
