***The mechanical/friction mechanism does NOT work***

——————

Era and identification :

Estimated production period: 1950s.

Vintage Japanese tinplate toy automobile manufactured by Ichiko (Ichiko Kogyo).

* ICHIKO
* JAPAN
* Friction-drive toy car (NOT working)
* American automobile-inspired coupe design

——————

Material :

Painted and lithographed tinplate with metal fittings and rubber tires.

The interior is represented through colorful lithographed tinplate, including striped upholstery details.

——————

Design :

A striking red two-door coupe styled after the large American automobiles that fascinated the post-war Japanese toy industry. The body has a long hood, rounded roofline, broad chrome-tone grille and bumpers, side trim, hood ornament, simulated headlights and printed interior.

The design captures the distinctly optimistic automotive styling of the 1950s, before the exaggerated tailfins that came to dominate American cars later in the decade.

One of the nicest surviving details is the lithographed interior, with its vivid green, yellow and blue striped seat pattern still clearly recognizable through the open windows.

——————

Size :

Please refer to the actual measurements shown in the photos for dimensions.

——————

This is an old played-with tin toy with substantial age-related wear.

History :

Ichiko was one of the Japanese manufacturers associated with the remarkable post-war tin-toy industry that supplied both the domestic market and a major export trade.

Automobiles became particularly important subjects. During the 1950s, American cars represented modernity, prosperity and dramatic new styling, and Japanese toy makers translated these full-size automobiles into brightly painted tinplate toys. The cars were not always literal scale models of one specific production vehicle; many combined recognizable contemporary styling cues into an idealized American automobile.

This example belongs squarely to that tradition. Its broad grille, extensive brightwork, long rounded body and jet-like hood ornament reflect the visual vocabulary of early-to-mid-1950s American motoring.

Tinplate toys of this period were ingenious constructions. Sheet metal could be stamped into complex three-dimensional body panels while lithography provided details that would otherwise have required numerous additional components. Here, that technique is particularly apparent in the colorful printed interior.

Surviving examples often show considerable wear because these were toys intended to be handled and played with. Although this car has lost a number of components and its mechanism is no longer operational, the main body retains its recognizable form, red finish, period trim and much of its lithographed interior. In its present state it has considerable visual character as an unrestored piece of post-war Japanese toy history.
