——————

Era and identification :

Estimated production period: late 1960s–early 1970s.

* Maker: Yoshinaga Prince Co., Ltd., Japan
* Brand: PRINCE
* Model: Pilette
* Vintage refillable gas lighter
* Flint ignition with side roller mechanism
* Bottom marked “PRINCE Pilette”
* Tested and working very well
* Currently fitted with a standard Zippo flint, which functions correctly in the mechanism

——————

Material :

Metal construction with a vivid red exterior finish and gold-tone metal trim and controls.

——————

Design :

This is an exceptionally cool little piece of Japanese industrial design. The long, narrow rectangular body is finished in brilliant red, framed by polished gold-tone metal, with a textured gold roller positioned along the side.

Rather than using a conventional top-mounted striking wheel, the Pilette incorporates its controls into the side of the case. The textured roller operates the flint ignition, while the black lever releases the gas. The burner emerges from the circular opening at the upper end, giving the lighter an unusual mechanical, almost miniature-instrument appearance.

The combination of saturated red lacquer, gold-tone hardware, exposed screws and compact geometric construction gives it a particularly strong 1960s–70s Japanese retro-futurist character. The paint loss actually works visually on this example—the exposed metal and worn finish give it a genuinely aged appearance rather than the look of a modern reproduction.

Size :

Compact pocket-size lighter.

Please refer to the actual measurements shown in the photos for dimensions.

——————

Condition and wear :

Tested and working very well.

The gas mechanism, black gas-release lever and flint ignition are functioning. A standard Zippo flint is currently installed and works with the lighter.

There are multiple areas of paint loss, together with scratches, surface marks, wear and discoloration to the metal finish from age and use.

These signs of wear are clearly part of the character of this particular example.

History :

PRINCE was the lighter brand of Yoshinaga Prince Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, one of the Japanese manufacturers that participated in the rapid development of compact gas lighters during Japan’s post-war manufacturing boom.

The company was already using the PRINCE name for smoking accessories by the 1950s, and in 1961 Yoshinaga Prince introduced its first gas lighter, the Prona 1. Prince subsequently became known for experimenting with lighter mechanisms, unusual body shapes and increasingly sophisticated gas-ignition systems.

That period is particularly interesting in lighter history because manufacturers were moving away from the traditional petrol-soaked wick principle toward refillable liquefied-gas systems. Prince was actively involved in that transition: Sadao Yoshinaga later developed a piezoelectric gas-lighter system with Japanese priority dating to 1970, followed by international patents in the early 1970s.

The Pilette belongs stylistically and mechanically to this early gas-lighter world. Instead of the push-button electronic ignition that would become increasingly common later, it retains the physical interaction of a flint: the user operates the roller to generate the spark and controls the gas mechanically.

Its form is also very much of its period. Japanese manufacturers of the 1960s and 1970s frequently treated the cigarette lighter as a small piece of personal design rather than simply a utility object. Bright finishes, contrasting polished metal and unconventional mechanisms allowed even a tiny pocket object to become something visually distinctive.

More than half a century later, that is arguably what makes this Pilette interesting: it looks like a miniature machine from the space-age era, and it still works.
