1980s New Wave & Rock Band Back Patch Set – Wham!, U2, Eurythmics, The Alarm & Thompson Twins
—————
Era and identification:
Estimated 1980s.
A striking set of five large-format music back patches featuring some of the defining British and Irish pop, new wave and rock acts of the decade:
* Wham!
* U2
* Eurythmics
* The Alarm
* Thompson Twins
The graphics, typography, limited colour palettes and screen-printed appearance are strongly characteristic of 1980s music merchandise. Each design captures a distinctly period image of the artist, from the tropical Wham! composition and U2’s stark barbed-wire portrait to the graphic, neon-like Eurythmics artwork.
No manufacturer or licensing information is visible, so the exact producer cannot be confirmed. They appear to be period commercial music patches intended for application to jackets, denim vests, bags or other fabric surfaces.
—————
Design:
All five patches are printed on black fabric, allowing the sharply contrasting colours and portrait graphics to stand out clearly.
The Wham! patch features George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley surrounded by tropical foliage and flowers, with a large angular red-and-yellow logo.
The U2 design uses a monochrome portrait, yellow band lettering and red barbed-wire graphics, creating the stark visual language associated with the band’s mid-1980s political rock imagery.
The Alarm patch presents the band in a blue, black and white photographic composition beneath bold red and green lettering.
The Thompson Twins design features illustrated portraits of the three members arranged around the group’s circular logo.
The Eurythmics patch uses stylised portraits of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart in pink, blue, orange and white linework, framed by repeated Eurythmics lettering.
Each patch has finished overlocked edges and was designed as a large central back piece rather than a small accessory patch.
Honestly, this is the kind of set that feels almost too good to sew onto anything. Displayed together in a well-chosen frame, they would make an exceptional piece of original 1980s music décor.
—————
Material:
Black woven synthetic or synthetic-blend fabric with printed graphics and overlocked edges.
No material labels are present.
—————
Size:
Approximately 32 cm wide × 37.5 cm high at the widest points.
The individual patches vary by a few millimetres, but all are approximately the same overall size.
—————
Condition and wear:
The patches appear unused and have not been sewn onto garments.
They have been stored together and show light age-related handling and storage traces. The fabric may sit slightly unevenly or show minor waviness from long-term storage. The printed graphics remain remarkably vivid, with strong colours and clear imagery throughout.
The reverse sides show natural ageing and some colour transfer or discolouration consistent with the printing process and storage of vintage textile patches.
—————
History:
Large music back patches became closely associated with fan-customised denim and leather jackets during the late 1970s and 1980s. Although often connected with punk and heavy metal battle jackets, the format was also widely produced for mainstream rock, new wave, synth-pop and post-punk artists.
Unlike small embroidered patches, these large printed panels were intended to dominate the back of a jacket and function almost like a wearable concert poster. They allowed fans to identify themselves immediately with a particular artist or musical scene.
The selection in this set is particularly representative of the first half and middle of the 1980s, when Wham!, U2, Eurythmics, The Alarm and Thompson Twins were all prominent within the international music landscape. Together, the five designs form an unusually coherent visual archive of 1980s British and Irish pop and rock culture.
—————
Important vintage note:
This is a vintage second-hand item with age, use, and history. Age-related wear, imperfections, and colour variation from lighting or screen settings should be expected. These are not grounds for post-purchase discounts or claims. Please purchase only if you are comfortable with the nature of vintage items. If you are looking for a perfect, mint condition item, please avoid this.
