Vintage 1980s Scalemead Survival Knife – Vanadium Stainless Japan – Hollow Handle & Original Sheath
Aliens Michael Biehn Connection
—————
Era and identification:
Vintage Scalemead survival knife, most likely dating from the 1980s and manufactured in Japan for the British export market.
The blade is stamped “SCALEMEAD SURVIVAL” on one side and “VANADIUM STAINLESS JAPAN” on the other. Scalemead was a British sporting-goods and arms-market name that sold various imported products. Other documented Scalemead knives from this period were Japanese-made, with some identified as Seki production, although the precise Japanese factory responsible for this example has not been confirmed.
—————
Material:
Vanadium-alloyed stainless-steel blade.
Black-finished metal hollow handle and guard.
Dark leather sheath with metal belt clip and snap fastening.
—————
Design:
A distinctive period survival-knife design with a broad clip-point blade, pronounced central grind, sawback spine, substantial crossguard and deeply sculpted finger-groove grip.
The screw-off pommel opens into a hollow storage compartment inside the handle. No survival accessories are included.
Although the hollow construction means it should not be confused with a solid full-tang military field knife, it has a notably substantial appearance and weight in the hand. The shaped grip fits the hand remarkably naturally and gives the knife a secure, satisfying feel.
This is personally my favourite knife from my collection. The combination of the exaggerated blade geometry, aged black finish and purposeful 1980s survival styling gives it a character that is difficult to reproduce in a modern knife.
Original fitted leather sheath included. The sheath has a belt clip on the reverse.
—————
Size:
Blade length: Approximately 14 cm+
Overall length: Approximately 28 cm
—————
Condition and wear:
The blade tip is chipped and uneven, as clearly documented.
Numerous scratches, sharpening marks and surface marks are present across both sides of the blade.
The cutting edge and sawback show previous use and wear.
The black finish on the guard, handle and pommel has extensive chips, scratches and areas of exposed metal, producing a strongly aged and utilitarian appearance.
The hollow compartment opens correctly, and the internal threads are present.
The sheath shows scratches, creasing, edge wear and general age-related use. The metal belt clip and fastening hardware remain attached.
Sold in its present vintage condition.
—————
History:
Hollow-handled survival knives became one of the defining outdoor and military-inspired designs of the late 1970s and 1980s. Their popularity grew alongside the era’s survivalist culture and action-film imagery, with oversized blades, sawback spines and storage compartments becoming instantly recognisable features.
This knife also has a particularly interesting connection to James Cameron’s Aliens (1986). Corporal Dwayne Hicks, portrayed by Michael Biehn, carried a Scalemead Survival knife throughout the film. The screen-used knife was another Scalemead model from the same general period and shared several important design elements with this example, including a closely similar black hollow handle, screw-off storage compartment and what appears to be the same style of leather sheath with a metal belt clip.
The blade profile used in the film was different from the sawback blade fitted to this example. However, both belong to the same family of Japanese-made Scalemead survival knives and reflect the same distinctive 1980s design language.
The original Hicks knife was later documented by the specialist film-memorabilia auction house Propstore, where it was described as a stainless-steel Scalemead Survival knife with a hollow black handle and leather sheath. Its appearance in one of the most influential science-fiction films of the 1980s gave the Scalemead name an unexpected place in cinema and prop-collecting history.
Japanese manufacturers played an important role in producing export survival knives during this period. Japan’s established cutlery industry supplied Western distributors with stainless-steel sporting and survival knives that combined practical construction with the dramatic styling demanded by the international market.
This Scalemead example appears considerably less common than the simpler straight-backed Scalemead model associated with Aliens.
—————
Important vintage note:
This is a vintage second-hand item with age, use, and history. Age-related wear, imperfections, and colour variation from lighting or screen settings should be expected. These are not grounds for post-purchase discounts or claims. Please purchase only if you are comfortable with the nature of vintage items. If you are looking for a perfect, mint condition item, please avoid this.
