—————
Era and identification :
Original pair of Swedish SEMO wooden model motorboat construction kits, produced by Sven E. Truedsson Modellflyg Industri, Malmö, Sweden.
Included are:
* SEMO 7 “Holliday Cruiser”
* SEMO 8 “Swordfish”
The manufacturer’s logo carries the wording “Etabl. 1938”, referring to the establishment of Sven E. Truedsson’s model-making business.
Based on the packaging, construction method, graphic design and combination of stamped wooden components with moulded plastic fittings, these kits date approximately to the late 1950s–1960s, most likely the early 1960s.
Both were designed as functional model motorboats intended to be equipped with an electric motor.
They are sold together as one lot.
—————
Material :
Traditional wooden model construction with pre-marked / stamped wooden sheets forming the hull, deck, cabin and structural sections.
Smaller fittings including items such as bollards, fairleads/chocks and other details are made from moulded plastic.
Wooden strips, small construction components, original plans and printed instructions are also included as photographed.
Electric motors are not included.
—————
Design :
The two models represent different expressions of post-war Scandinavian recreational motorboat design.
The SEMO 7 Holliday Cruiser has a substantial enclosed cabin, raised superstructure and classic family-cruiser proportions.
The SEMO 8 Swordfish has a lower and sportier silhouette, with a long foredeck and more streamlined cabin profile.
These were not simple snap-together kits. The builder was expected to carefully release the wooden components from their sheets, trim and sand the edges, shape curved sections where required, assemble the hull structure, install the cabin and fittings, and finally paint the completed model.
This construction method reflects an era when model building involved considerably more woodworking and individual craftsmanship than later injection-moulded plastic kits.
The colourful illustrated boxes are also notable in their own right, combining mid-century Scandinavian commercial graphics with dramatic maritime imagery.
—————
Size :
SEMO 7 Holliday Cruiser:
Approximately 34 cm long when completed, according to period specifications.
SEMO 8 Swordfish:
Unknown
—————
Condition and wear :
Both kits are unassembled vintage model kits and retain a large amount of their original contents, including wooden construction sheets, plans, printed material, plastic fittings and original boxes.
SEMO 7 Holliday Cruiser: Parts No. 12 and No. 17 shown on the construction drawing are missing.
Both are relatively small components, but they would need to be reproduced or substituted if the buyer intends to complete the model.
For the SEMO 8 Swordfish, the contents appear extensive, but every individual component has not been separately counted against the original plan and absolute completeness is therefore not guaranteed.
The original cardboard boxes show age-related storage wear, edge wear, marks, minor deformation and general ageing.
Plans and printed material show normal age-related discoloration, folds and handling wear.
Everything included in this sale is photographed. Please check the photos carefully before purchasing, as they form an important part of the description and show exactly what is included.
No electric motors are included.
—————
History :
Sven E. Truedsson established his model-making enterprise in Malmö in 1938, and SEMO became part of Sweden’s developing model and hobby industry during the mid-20th century.
Wooden model boats such as these represent a transitional period in hobby manufacturing. Traditional sheet-wood construction was still dominant, while increasingly sophisticated moulded plastic fittings were beginning to appear alongside it.
The builder was therefore working with a combination of woodworking, model engineering and finishing rather than simply assembling prefabricated plastic shells.
The accompanying material also shows the international character of the hobby market. In addition to Swedish documentation, German-language material survives with these kits, indicating that SEMO products were marketed beyond Sweden.
The two models together offer an interesting snapshot of Scandinavian hobby culture and leisure-boat design from the post-war period, combining model engineering, mid-century packaging and Swedish manufacturing history.
—————
Important vintage note :
This is a vintage second-hand item. Minor imperfections, slight color differences, light wear, and variations due to screen settings are natural and expected with age. These characteristics are part of the item’s history and authenticity. Post-purchase discount requests based on minor vintage traits will not be accepted. If you are looking for a perfect, mint condition item, please avoid this.
