When Can I Use Buyer Protection?
Starting a case is an important function to protect buyers and sellers when something goes wrong. However, it is important to know when it is appropriate to start a dispute and when it is not. Buyer protection is designed to address issues, but it is not intended to serve as a right of withdrawal. You also cannot expect compensation for damage clearly stated in the description or shown in the images.
In this guide, we list some of the most common valid and invalid reasons to start a case.
Valid reasons for a case
- The product does not match the description – If the received item is significantly different from what was described in the listing, e.g., the wrong item, model, or damage not mentioned.
- The product was never delivered – The seller has not sent the item despite payment being made, and more than 7 days have passed.
- The shipment is damaged – The item arrived in broken condition due to poor packaging or another reason.
- Counterfeit goods – The received product turns out to be a counterfeit or pirated copy.
Invalid reasons for a case
- Change of mind – The buyer regrets their purchase after the item has already been delivered and is in the correct condition according to the listing. The right of withdrawal applies only if you purchased from a business seller. The right of withdrawal cannot be used by opening a case; instead, you need to contact the company.
- Slow delivery – As long as the seller can prove that the item was shipped on time and is in transit.
- The product does not differ from the description if the defect is stated in the images or text – For example, if the listing states that the item is well-used, a case cannot be initiated for minor defects such as a small hole or wear.
- The product does not fit me – If the seller has accurately provided the size according to the label, it is not valid to initiate a case, even if the item turns out to be larger or smaller than expected.
- Defective item – If the product was sold as defective, you cannot initiate a case because something is broken.
- Original condition – No compensation will be provided if the item has been altered through repairs, use, or other actions that mean the item is no longer in its original condition.
Recommendation Before starting a case, make sure you first contact the other party to try to resolve the issue directly. Clear communication can often prevent unnecessary conflicts and lead to quicker solutions.
