A CanorousQuintet was formed in 1991, they released ’The Time Of Autumn’ demofollowed by their debut MCD ‘As Tears’ and two full lengths;‘Silence of the World Beyond’ and ‘The Only Pure Hate’. Althoughnot as well known and many bands in the Swedish Death Metal scene,ACQ features members from such prominent acts as Amon Amarth, NidenDiv 187, October Tiden and Guidance Of Sin. The band then split-upin 1999. In 2005, they reformed under the name The Plague (Swe),but later changed their name to This Ending. Although short livedand underrated, A Canorous Quintet stands among the best DeathMetal acts in the history of Sweden. Their full length albumSilence Of The World Beyond are among the best of its kind. Justlisten to the riffs. I promise this will impress you. Great riffsare the very foundation of any good metal disc and/or metal band.Without lasting well-written riffs, metal would be nothing. TheBlack Spiral is particularly notable when referring to thissubject. The track opens with an unusual but great riff, and isfollowed with what is definitely one of the best and most brilliantmelodic black metal riffs ever. The album never loses its appealfrom start to finish. What keeps this disc out of the 90s ratingbracket is the production. The album doesn’t sound awful, but itdoes sound pretty thin. This is surprising considering thatTagtgren did the production. It’s over a decade old, sure, but therecording technology was there at that time, and I don’t feel thatgood old Pete really took full advantage of it. Silence has acouple absolutely timeless songs, in addition to The Black Spiral.In The Twilight Of Fear is one of them. A definite extreme metalclassic, if you will. It seems that all quality extreme metal isoverlooked to some degree, but I’m certain that this album was,even more so.
