Beskrivning

This is a map depicting the American assault troops manoeuvre in D-Day landing rehearsal and German E-Boats breach defences and attack landing craft. The map shows the area of Slapton Sands, Devon, and the Operation 'Tiger' zone.

Slapton Sands in Devon was the site of a disastrous D-Day rehearsal called Exercise Tiger in April 1944. The exercise, intended to prepare troops for the Normandy landings, resulted in significant casualties due to a German E-boat attack and friendly fire incidents. The event was kept secret for a long time due to its sensitive nature and impact on morale.

Exercise Tiger, or Operation Tiger was one of a series of large-scale rehearsals for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Held in April 1944 on Slapton Sands in Devon, it proved fraught with difficulties. Coordination and communication problems resulted in friendly fire injuries during the exercise, and an Allied convoy positioning itself for the landing was attacked by E-boats of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine, resulting in the deaths of at least 749 American servicemen.

A powerful visual, historical, and symbolic document from one of the most decisive moments of the 20th century.
