Shino-keramik (Shino-yaki) är en av Japans tidigaste keramiska traditioner som använde vit glasyr. Den uppstod under Momoyamaperioden och produceras främst i Mino-regionen i Gifu prefektur, inklusive städerna Tajimi och Toki. Shino kännetecknas av sin mjuka vita fältspatsglasyr, kraftiga och rustika former samt naturliga variationer från bränningen. Ett vanligt dekormotiv är växt- eller landskapsmotiv målade med järnpigment på leran, vilket uttrycker den spontana och återhållsamma wabi-sabi-estetiken. Ett av de mest särpräglade dragen hos Shino är förekomsten av så kallade “mushi-kui” (bokstavligen ”insektsbett”) – små gropar eller hål i ytan som liknar bitmärken. Dessa är inte skador orsakade av insekter, utan naturliga märken som uppstår under bränningen, ofta från spruckna glasyrbubblor eller orenheter i leran. I japansk estetik betraktas sådana ”brister” som vackra uttryck för naturens imperfektion och unikhet. Varje Shino-föremål värderas för sin individualitet och djupa kulturella betydelse, och är därför mycket uppskattat bland både temästare och keramikentusiaster.

Shino ware (Shino-yaki) is one of Japan’s earliest types of pottery to use white glaze, originating in the Momoyama period and primarily produced in the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture, including cities like Tajimi and Toki. It is known for its soft white feldspar glaze, thick and rustic forms, and natural firing variations. A common decorative technique involves painting plant or landscape motifs on the clay using iron pigment, expressing the spontaneous and understated aesthetics of wabi-sabi. One of the most distinctive features of Shino ware is the appearance of "mushi-kui" (literally "insect bites")—small pits or holes on the surface that resemble bite marks. These are not flaws caused by insects, but rather natural imperfections formed during firing, often from bursting glaze bubbles or impurities in the clay. In Japanese aesthetics, such "flaws" are appreciated as beautiful expressions of nature, imperfection, and uniqueness.
